The Faculty of Engineering started education in 1969 as the Faculty of Engineering Sciences under Ege University in Izmir. In 1982, the faculties of Construction, Mechanical and Geological Sciences were abolished, and their departments were merged with some departments of the Faculty of Fine Arts to form the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, which continued its education at Dokuz Eylül University with departments of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geophysical Engineering, Architecture, and Urban and Regional Planning. In 1992, after the dissociation of Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning Departments to join the newly established Faculty of Architecture, the faculty was renamed as the Faculty of Engineering.

Today, the faculty has a total of twelve departments with the establishment of the Department of Computer Engineering in 1994, the Department of Textile Engineering in 1997, the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering in 1997 and the Department of Aerospace Engineering in 2021. In the 1992-93 academic year, education in the evening programs of our departments of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Geological Engineering began, and currently, the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering continue their evening programs.

The undergraduate programs of the Departments of Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, and Textile Engineering have been accredited by the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs (MÜDEK).
